Meet the Experts

Greg Roberts

Greg Roberts -- CEO, Spectrum Group International
Greg Roberts, who was born and raised in Pasadena, California, was introduced to the world of numismatics by his uncle, Gene Calvert. One year, when he was about 11 years old, his uncle gave him a coin album for Christmas. Two years later, Greg attended his first coin club meeting with his uncle. From these initial experiences Greg soon developed into a collector, but equally quickly to develop was his interest in the business and trading side of the rare coin market.

During his high school years, Greg learned that he was able to make extra money buying and selling coins. His transition from a hobbyist to a dealer came naturally, especially since weekend trips to local coin shows provided Greg with enough money that he did not need to have another job while going to school. He eventually ended up selling coins to his high school principal as well as his friends.

After graduating from high school, Greg began attending college while also working for Nick Buzolich, Sr. and Nick Buzolich, Jr. at Quality Coin Exchange, a father-son wholesale partnership. The year was 1980, and Greg credits them with giving him his first formal education in the coin industry.

Greg next moved on to a coin buyer position with a retail operation in Newport Beach, California. During his nine-year tenure with the firm he helped bring in more than $120 million worth of coins. He started his own coin business in 1990.

A few years later, Spectrum Numismatics approached Greg with an offer to take over the firm. He accepted, and has been with Spectrum ever since. Today, as CEO of Spectrum Group International, Greg manages an international collectibles network with affiliates headquartered on three continents. Spectrum Group International is the third-largest collectibles firm in the world behind Christies and Sotheby's.

Greg is a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), a life member of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) and a member of the Industry Council for Tangible Assets (ICTA). He is married, loves spending time with his children and is a big fan of the California Angels and Los Angeles Lakers.

Andrew Glassman -- President, Spectrum Numismatics International
Andrew Glassman graduated from California State University at Fullerton in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting, and completed his Certified Public Accountant requirements in 2003. He has been with Spectrum for more than 18 years, joining the firm in 1991 as Controller and taking over as CFO in 2000. He is currently the President of the company, and has also served as a member of the Board of Directors for Spectrum Numismatics.

During Andrew's time with the firm, Spectrum has grown into an internationally recognized, preeminent rare coin and currency dealer. Andrew has contributed to that growth every step of the way, and as President of the company he continues to be involved with every aspect of the business from top to bottom. He strives daily to continue Spectrum's growth and commitment to excellence, and considers himself extremely fortunate to work with one of the finest staffs in the entire rare coin industry.

Andrew is a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) and the American Numismatic Association (ANA). He has been married 15 years and has two children. An avid baseball fan, Andrew has also coached little league for eight years.

Paul Nugget

Paul Nugget -- Spectrum East
Paul Nugget has been a professional numismatist for more than 40 years, beginning his career as a dealer in July of 1969. Paul was attracted to rare coins at an early age through his love of art and history. He joined Spectrum in November of 1995, having earlier managed the numismatic department at Manfra, Tordella and Brooks -- one of the largest gold coin traders in the world during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s.

Paul heads up the East Coast division of Spectrum Numismatics International. He is involved daily with the buying and selling of coins and is a specialist in rare date United States gold issues. Throughout his career, in fact, Paul has bought and sold examples of virtually all classic United States gold issues from 1795 through 1933. He has traded coins in North America, Europe and Asia, and was one of the earliest importers of bulk United States gold coins from central European banks beginning in the early 1970s.

Paul is a member of most professional and hobby organizations in numismatics, including the Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS), Florida United Numismatists (FUN) and 20th Century Gold Club. He has been a member of the prestigious Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) since 1980 and a Life Member of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) since 1976. Paul has also authored numerous articles on rare coins and has contributed to many numismatic books, including the standard reference A Guide Book of United States Coins (a.k.a. The Official Red Book) by R.S. Yeoman, to which he has been a contributor since 1977.

Married and a father of two, Paul's passions outside of numismatics include art and American history. He is also a lifelong boxing aficionado, is a fan of baseball and football and follows most New York sports teams.

Martin Paul

Martin Paul -- Senior Numismatist
Martin Paul became interested in coins at a young age. Starting as a collector at age 12, he was already dealing in coins while in high school and then became very active while attending college. By 1979, Martin had received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Berkeley and had started his graduate studies at Cornell University with the goal of earning an advanced degree as an agricultural economist. The late 1970s/early 1980s was the height of one of the strongest rare coin markets in U.S. history, however, and Martin decided to leave Cornell to concentrate on numismatics full time. He launched his professional numismatic career by accepting a position as a buyer at New England Rare Coin Galleries in June of 1980. Within a year he was running their wholesale buying division.

Martin founded his own rare coin company in 1982. In March of 2007 he joined Spectrum, having also spent several years working at other large rare coin firms. At Spectrum he serves as the firm's primary buyer through auction, actively participating in both large national auctions and small local sales. He also manages much of Spectrum's rare coin inventory and is responsible for quality control.

Throughout his 30+ years as a professional numismatist, Martin has bought and sold hundreds of millions of dollars in rare coins. He has handled many of the rarest and most famous United States coins, including three examples of the 1804 Silver Dollar (the King of Siam, Garrett and Adams-Carter specimens), the unique 1870-S Half Dime and several 1876-CC Twenty-Cent pieces. Professional affiliations include life membership in the American Numismatic Association (ANA), the National Silver Dollar Roundtable and the Michigan State Numismatic Society. He has also been a member of the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) since 1982.

Widely traveled, Martin particularly enjoys spending time abroad.

Richard Melamed

Richard Melamed -- Senior Numismatist
One of the most respected numismatists in the industry, Richard Melamed has been involved with coins on a professional level for more than 35 years. During that time he has held such diverse positions as president of his own rare coin company, grader for Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and senior numismatist for some of the world's largest numismatic firms. He is a member of many professional and hobby organizations, including the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), American Numismatic Association (ANA), Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS) and Florida United Numismatists (FUN). An expert on all aspects of the U.S. rare coin market, Richard brings to Spectrum an eagerness to grow and expand the company through his own rich and diverse experiences.

During his distinguished career Richard has bought and sold hundreds of millions of dollars in collectible coins, including some of the most desirable and famous rarities in U.S. numismatics. He was involved with the 1998 purchase of the Ed Trompeter Collection that traded hands for more than $15 million and has handled such other important coins as the finest-known proof 1838-O Capped Bust, Reeded Edge Half Dollar and one of the nine-known 1870-S Seated Liberty Silver Dollars.

Richard and his wife Cherri have been married for 23 years. They have two children, a daughter Madeleine, 16 years old, and a son Eli, age 10. Richard is a native of Minnesota and collects Minnesota National Bank Notes. He is also a hockey fan and enjoys both water and snow skiing.

Thad Olsen

Thad Olson -- Senior Numismatist
Thad Olson has been buying and selling coins for more than 30 years, starting at the early age of 15. He first became interested in coins in the 1970s by watching his older brother sift through bags and rolls of coins obtained from banks looking for silver and rare-date pieces. Thad quickly became hooked on this profitable "pastime" and started searching through bank rolls and bags with three friends (one of whom is Greg Roberts, now the CEO of Spectrum Group International).

During his career as a professional numismatist Thad has worked extensively with Silver Dollars and United States gold coinage. He handled many original Mint-sealed bags of Silver Dollars in the late 1970s/early 1980s and also helped sort two of the largest and most important coin hoards in the history of U.S. numismatics: the Binion Collection of Silver Dollars that came out of Las Vegas and the Wells Fargo Nevada Gold Hoard of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles. Thad has also worked as a grader for Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) at various times throughout his career.

First joining Spectrum in 1992, Thad has been with the firm more than 15 years. A primary coin buyer, he sorts through literally thousands of coins every week. Professional and hobby memberships include the American Numismatic Association (ANA), Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS) and Florida United Numismatists (FUN).

Thad and his wife have been married for more than 20 years and have two children, a son and a daughter. He enjoys softball and is a prominent collector of Silver Dollar error coins.

Dale Larsen

Dale Larsen -- Senior Numismatist
A native of Elgin, Illinois, Dale Larsen’s passion for collecting coins began in 1958. When he was eight years old, Dale would take the bus to the YMCA in downtown Elgin on Saturdays. Once there, he would set up a row of tables, walk across the street to the bank, pick up rolls of Lincoln Cents, Silver Dollars and other silver coins and take them back to the YMCA. Dale would search through the rolls, take out his finds, replace monies removed, return the rolls to the bank and cash them in for more rolls to repeat the process all over again. He did this until the bank tellers were tired of seeing him!

Dale continued to collect until high school, after which he took a break for a few years. During this break from coin collecting, Dale earned his BS in Radio/TV/Journalism from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1972. He returned to the hobby in 1975 and remains an active collector to this very day.

Dale built a career selling industrial chemicals for 30 years and was heavily involved with direct sales to the food, industrial and transportation markets. During these three decades of work in that industry, Dale became very successful interacting with the public. His objective was to combine his love for coin collecting with his experience in working with the public. When Dale joined Spectrum in 2002, he found the perfect opportunity to meet his goal. Spectrum needed someone to work with the collecting public, travel to evaluate qualifying collections for purchase and be patient and understanding with the needs of the collecting public. He continues to provide these and numerous other services to Spectrum’s clients as a senior coin buyer for the firm.

Dale is a member of the American Numismatic Association (ANA), Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS) and the National Silver Dollar Roundtable. He still considers himself a collector at heart and has an outstanding collection of high-quality rainbow toned Morgan Dollars and wonderfully toned Peace Dollars. Other collecting interests include beautifully toned Walking Liberty Half Dollars, Lincoln Cents, type coins and proof coins, all with “killer” color. A new area of interest for Dale is “chopmarked” Trade Dollars in AU and BU grades.

Outside of numismatics, Dale is a Chicago Cubs fan and part of a Notre Dame Domer family (his daughter and son-in-law are Notre Dame grads). He has been married to his high school sweetheart for 39 years and is a grandfather of three with two more grandchildren--identical twins--due in the Spring of 2010.

Kerry Pieropan

Kerry Pieropan – Senior Numismatist
Kerry Pieropan has more than 20 years experience as a numismatist. His continual passion of rare coins began in 1987 after receiving a gift of a circulated Silver Dollar set from his stepfather. Out of an initial interest in Morgan Dollars, Kerry's expertise has expanded to include all United States coins from the Colonial era to modern times.

After founding and operating his own rare coin company, Pieropan Numismatics, Inc., Kerry joined Spectrum in June of 1994 and specializes in acquisitions. Kerry travels extensively on the West Coast from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest, devoting much of his time and talent to cultivating relationships with other rare coin dealers. He is a managing partner of Pacific Expos, LLC, which conducts a 60-table coin show twice yearly. One of his many goals, using this coin show as a platform, is to help encourage the younger generation to gain a stronger interest in coins by offering free admission to kids age 15 and under and giving each child a set of mixed foreign and U.S. coins. Kerry also has been a life member of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) since the early 1990's.

Kerry's interests outside of numismatics include collecting contemporary art, as well as continuing to grow his real estate business with a focus on small apartment buildings. He and his wife, Myra, have been married since 2005. His wife is from the deep South and if her name comes up, he is quick to tell everyone about her tasty southern fried chicken.

Richard Gonzalez

Richard Gonzales -- U.S. Gold Department Trader
Richard Gonzales has been involved with numismatics since 1982, when he took a job as a shipping/inventory control clerk with A-mark Precious Metals of Beverly Hills, California (now an affiliate of Spectrum Numismatics International). Over his many years in the coin business, Richard has had the unique experience of having worked closely with industry leaders and has developed a reputation for knowledgeability and service.

In August of 2006, Richard began his career with Spectrum Numismatics where he now manages the firm's multi-million dollar wholesale U.S. gold coin inventory. His primary responsibilities include buying and selling wholesale to the numismatic trade and on the daily exchange for coin traders.  Richard is a member of the American Numismatic Association (ANA), an avid golfer and a proud father of three children. His favorite saying is: "Do what you enjoy and it can hardly be called work!"

Peter Treglia

Peter Treglia -- Director of Currency
With 12 years of experience as a professional numismatist, Peter Treglia brings a wealth of knowledge to his position as Director of Currency for Spectrum Numismatics. He first became involved with numismatics almost by accident, it turns out, as baseball cards were his first area of interest in the collectibles market. Peter started collecting baseball cards at the age of 12 and shortly after discovered a card shop that also sold coins. He purchased his first coin at the age of 14, became a dealer almost immediately at age 15 and quickly discovered paper money thanks to the Internet. After collecting paper money for about a year, Peter started selling notes on eBay. Once he realized that he could make money trading currency, he immediately became hooked and saw himself buying and selling notes for the rest of his life.

In February of 2005 Peter was hired as one of the five original currency graders for Paper Money Guaranty (PMG), the currency grading affiliate of Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). Prior to taking that position Peter had studied business management at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell for two years. After working for PMG for seven months, Peter left the firm to start his own currency venture. Shortly after, however, he was approached by CEO Greg Roberts with an offer to lead Spectrum's currency division. He gladly accepted, and now even assists the firm's sister company Stack's Bowers Galleries with paper money cataloging and consignments in addition to his primary duties buying currency for Spectrum Numismatics.

Born and raised in Waltham, Massachusetts, Peter is a first-generation American of Italian heritage. As such, he finds equal enjoyment collecting both Waltham National Bank Notes and Italian currency. Peter is a fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, and also enjoys golf and driving fast cars. He is a Life Member of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) and the Society of Paper Money Collectors (SPMC), and is also a member of the Professional Currency Dealers Association (PCDA), currently serving as a member of the Board of Governors.
